BALLET
We follow the English ballet style, working in classical technique incorporating the romantic ballet period in the higher grades. We offer training in grades from Preparatory to Major, in both RAD and IDTA.
CHARACTER (NATIONAL)
This is incorporated in the studies of the RAD syllabus to include Hungarian, Russian and Polish. Formerly known as 'National', it is now known as 'Character', and the studies form a large part of ballets such as Swan Lake and Coppélia. They have their own techniques and characteristics, and enhance the study of classical ballet.
MODERN JAZZ
This style has a strong ballet base, with classical jazz and contemporary. It develops strong core stability and working with and against gravity expresses both mood and emotion. We teach grades from Preparatory to Major.
TAP DANCE
This uses the feet as a percussive instrument to find its voice within many different styles and rhythms. We teach this with a strong jazz style, incorporating the American influence both in technique and the music. Grades can be studied from Preparatory to Major.
THEATRE CRAFT
This is the study of the
theatre, its history, and its terminology, and is used in conjunction with musical
theatre. It combines music, song and the spoken word, similar to West End Musicals.
We devote time to studying this when preparing our yearly showcases.
FREESTYLE AND STREET DANCE
This type of dance incorporates styles such as 'hip hop' and 'funk', from '1970’s' to 'popping and locking', and is physical dancing expressed as an art form.
BODY CONDITIONING
Using a strong Pilates base, dancers are encouraged to become 'body aware', and to develop a greater understanding of centre and core stability. This is key to the development of all aspects of dance. Students are encouraged to limber their bodies and to find an inner strength which, when combined with dance technique, enhances their own personal ability. Body conditioning is taught within each ballet and jazz class, and for older students is combined with the Street class for personal development.
ADULT CLASSES
Tap - This is a great
class. It is taught by Miss Mandy who
loves teaching her 'ladies' and having a great time herself.
Routines are fun, fast and fascinating!
Varied tempi and rhythms abound, with a strong emphasis on the social side
of dance. Challenging dances with
aspirations for 'performance'.
Adult Ballet – Also useful for older students who have started ballet later in life. Working steadily on developing the key aspects for classical dance within the constraints of the more mature body.
Adult Street – Taught by
Miss Kelly, this is a great workout, incorporating current trends of style and
music, and working on routines which become more
and more challenging each week. The
routines are changed every six weeks, thus enabling each student to work to their
own level of ability, and develop a structured routine within that time.
